Why preparation changes the answer

Most declined business loan applications are not declined because the business is bad. They stall because something is missing: statements that do not cover the period the lender needs, a BAS that was never lodged, an ATO balance the owner did not mention, or an amount that does not match the stated purpose. Each of those creates doubt, and doubt slows things down or ends them.

This checklist covers the items that come up most often, weighted so the essentials count more. It is not a lender's scoring model, and a perfect score does not guarantee approval. What it does is show you where the gaps are before a lender finds them.

How to fix the common gaps

  • Statements: download six to twelve months as PDFs straight from internet banking, covering every business account.
  • BAS and tax: ask your accountant to bring lodgements up to date and print an ATO account statement. Our guide to ATO payment plans versus loans explains how lenders view tax debt.
  • Credit file: check your report and correct any errors before applying. See how business credit scores work.
  • Purpose and amount: work it out with the cash flow gap calculator rather than guessing.

What a high score means

A high score means you can answer a lender's first questions quickly and back them up with paperwork. That usually means faster decisions and fewer requests for more information. It also means you are in a better position to review an offer calmly instead of signing the first thing that arrives.

When you are ready, make one enquiry. There is no credit check when you first enquire, one lending partner reviews your details and a real person calls. If a few items are still unticked, enquire anyway and mention them; it helps the conversation start honestly.

Frequently asked questions

What documents do I need for a business loan?

For smaller unsecured loans, usually ID, ABN details and recent business bank statements. Larger loans may also need financial statements, tax returns, BAS, an ATO portal statement, a list of assets and liabilities and details of any security. Our documents guide has the full list.

Does this checklist affect my credit file?

No. It runs in your browser and is not a credit check or an application.

What if I score low?

It simply means there is preparation to do. Each unticked item points to a specific task, and most can be completed in a few days.

Can I still enquire before everything is ready?

Yes. Enquiring is free and does not involve a credit check. A lending partner can tell you which documents matter most for your situation.

Your next step

Have a question about your own situation?

Guides can only go so far. Make one enquiry and a person who works with business lending every day will review it. No credit check to ask, no lead auction, and nothing to sign until you are ready.

  • No credit check to enquire. Asking a question about your options leaves no mark on your credit file. A credit check only happens later, if you decide to apply.
  • One enquiry, not a lead auction. Your details are not sprayed across a list of lenders. One lending partner looks at your situation properly.
  • A real person reads it. A person who works with business finance every day reviews your enquiry and calls you. Accurate answers help them get it right first time.
